2008 Hyundai Tiburon GT Road Test Review

More and more Hyundais are on the road now. It’s a fact. Whether considering the Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Azera, Tucson, Santa Fe, Veracruz, Tiburon or the new Genesis, the Korean car manufacturer has seen its share of increased sales over the past decade, and for good reason. Not only are its new products exceptionally good, but a great warranty backs them all up. Truly, Hyundai is on such a roll of good fortune that it’s not only one of the last companies left building a sport coupe, but it’s got another one on the way.

The Tib’s staying power alone has made it a bit of an anomaly in a shrinking segment. One by one its rivals have fallen, from the Honda Prelude to the Toyota Celica, Mazda’s Presidio to Chrysler Group’s Diamond Star cars; the Mitsubishi Eclipse the last remaining of the three and one of only a handful of front-drive sport coupes that remain available at all, although Scion’s tC kind of replaced the Celica. Somehow the Tiburon continues to lure in the tuner market as well as regular folks just wanting a fun-to-drive, great looking commuter car that’s easy on gas.

If you hadn’t heard, Tiburon is Spanish for shark and this Korean carnivore of a car is seriously scaring its competition into hiding. Just look at it. Whether it’s the base model GS that starts at a mere $17,270 or the top-line GT Limited, they look darn good thanks to European styling influences that deliver solid driving dynamics on both base and top-line trim levels.

The Tiburon comes with two engine choices. The entry-level 2.0-liter inline-four with 138 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque is easy on the pocketbook when initially buying and then while refueling, and plenty fun to drive, while the 24-valve, DOHC, 2.7-liter V6, which produces 172 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 181 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm, is a real blast to drive in this small, lightweight package.

Along with its nicely endowed engine, the Tiburon GT has a European sport-tuned suspension that makes for some fun in the corners. Whether I was tackling tight turns or just driving through city streets, the ground-hugging Tiburon and its front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link suspension setup glides super smoothly over dry or wet pavement and holds its own in the curves when called upon. And with the addition of standard P215/45R17 tires and 17-inch alloy wheels, this street shark remains cool and collected and feels very stable at highway speeds.

And getting to highway speeds felt and sounded good. The low-note grumble from the dual exhaust was quite mellifluous. It wasn’t too throaty and wasn’t so loud that it attracted negative attention. Rather, the V6-equipped Tib gives off a refined note of sporty athleticism. Furthermore, the optional smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual mode was just the one to do the trick. While I would have liked to harness all of the V6’s 172 horsepower with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, the 4-speed automatic was just perfect for all the city and highway driving I was forced to endure. Plus, it’s a lot easier on the legs when stuck in grid-lock traffic, which is something I frequently find myself in.

Inside my Tiburon tester’s cabin was a sea of plush, black leather mixed with sport seats and metal grain trim. What I love about the interior is its simplistic nature, with a modern flare. It’s not a ‘busy’ looking cabin by any means, which adds to its appeal. It does, however, have quite the fancy audio system, as I would expect this shark of a car to have. The Clarion AM/FM/CD stereo comes complete with a plug/MP3/SD Memory Card reader featuring Music Catcher II technology, 4 speakers, tweeters and more. Additionally, the backlighting colors of the stereo can be changed. The button saying “Color” changes the hue of the instrumentation around the center stack to either pink, blue, green, orange and many more. Or, there is an option to mix things up and have the colors continually changing. It’s a great touch to an already great system. The only criticism that I had was the writing on the buttons. It was way too small. But after fiddling with the system for a while, I familiarized myself with what was what and it was smooth sailing.

As sporty as the Tiburon is, it wouldn’t be a complete package if it didn’t have top-notch safety features. Along with 4-wheel power-assisted disc brakes with ABS, the Tiburon hosts dual front airbags along with front seat-mounted, side impact airbags. The body of this shark is constructed with a steel safety cage complete with side-impact door beams and front and rear crumple zones to protect passengers inside.

Practicality-wise, the Tiburon is a great 2-passenger car even though it seats 4. I say that because my friend Jamie, who measures in at 5’3″, couldn’t sit in the rear seat comfortably as there is only 34 inches of headroom back there. Her head touched the top, which made for an awkward ride. In order to refrain from making contact with the ceiling, she had to sit hunched over. Not so nice. Also, when I went over speed bumps or any kind of noticeably irregular pavement, you can probably guess what happened! Ouch is right. Her head ended up just where she didn’t want it. Now, the rear seats would be great for younger kids or shorter individuals, but not for anyone Jamie’s size or taller.

Just because there wasn’t a lot of people-room didn’t mean there wasn’t a generous amount of cargo space in the liftback trunk. In total there are 14.8 cubic feet, with the rear seats filled with groceries, shopping goodies, personal items or what have you. Visibility was also pretty good for a sports coupe. The C-pillars weren’t too thick and the rear window wasn’t too high, making parallel parking or backing up as easy as can be in a 2-door.

Overall, the 2008 Hyundai Tiburon GT has a commanding road presence and offers its driver some ‘colorful’ amenities. Not to mention a 5-year/60,000 mile comprehensive warranty and a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Fuel economy is also pretty reasonable with an estimated 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. And it looks so darn good. It’s no wonder why the streets are now infested with sharks… Korean sharks that is.

LAS VEGAS, Nev., 10/30/2007 Six distinct Hyundai vehicles made their world debut today at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association’s (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, including the first-ever Elantra Touring “Beach Cruiser” Concept. In its seventh year at SEMA, Hyundai showed off vehicles spanning its entire product portfolio, proving that customization is not just for sport compacts anymore. Hyundai custom SEMA vehicles will be on display at booth #24385 at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Oct. 30 – Nov. 2, 2007.

Hyundai in-house customized vehicles include the INCUS “Innovative Customization” Elantra and Mobis “Parts Expo Vehicle” Tiburon. Project vehicles built by aftermarket tuning companies include:
– “High-Tech Urban Escape” Veracruz by Troy Lee Designs – the first-ever modified Veracruz crossover
– “VIP Luxury Tuner” Azera sedan from Street Concepts

K-Daddyz Kustomz Elantra Touring “Beach Cruiser” Concept

K-Daddyz Kustomz is participating with Hyundai for the fifth consecutive year at SEMA with a world premier. Kyle “K-Daddy” Gann took a prototype Elantra Touring five-door compact (based on the i30 five-door) and created the ultimate Southern California “Beach Cruiser.”

A two-tone “Amazing Grape” and “Tango Orange” paint scheme with Hyundai’s “Flying H” tribal graphics highlight the flowing curves of the concept, while a green Polynesian tiki idol graces the hood. True to the cruising culture, the vehicle features a front-to-rear panoramic sunroof. K-Daddyz’ team also crafted a full line of interior and exterior billet accessories along with a custom race exhaust and ground effects kit. This approach is highlighted by a custom front grille with interlocking “Flying H” logos.

Performance enhancements include a prototype cold intake system, strut tower brace and painted motor cover and accessories. The aggressive and sporty look for the “Beach Cruiser” is completed by 20-inch Konig Rolf Blix 3 wheels matched with low-profile Dunlap Sport Maxx tires. The purple and orange paint scheme is carried through to the interior and is complemented by two-tone brown leather surfaces and matching interior accents. No cruising car would be complete without state-of-the-art audio and video capabilities, and K-Daddy delivers with four rear-seat video screens, eight speakers, five amplifiers and eight Infinity subwoofers. In signature attention-to-detail fashion, K-Daddy created billet speaker grilles to match the exterior “Flying H” grilles, fabricated by Ryno Manufacturing. Gann also covered the five amplifiers in the trunk with an orange fiberglass “Flying H,” hand painted with a purple outline.

Street Concepts – VIP Luxury Tuner Azera

A long-time Hyundai tuner, Shawn Williams from Street Concepts, delivered a sophisticated, bespoke Azera sedan. His team took Hyundai’s flagship and turned it into the “VIP Luxury Tuner.” The Azera’s custom white pearl paint and black suede seats with white stitching create a sporty look to match the Eibach suspension, MagnaFlow catback exhaust, K&N intake and Brembo brakes.

Troy Lee Designs – High-Tech Urban Escape Vehicle

Troy Lee Designs, known for its custom-design racing helmets, sports equipment and apparel, applied its unique artistry to the first-ever Hyundai Veracruz custom. The all-new Veracruz, launched earlier this year, has been critically acclaimed for boldly challenging the Lexus RX350 in quality and performance.

The Veracruz “High-Tech Urban Escape Vehicle” showcases the full potential of this vehicle’s platform in the hands of an enthusiastic tuner shop. The skilled painters applied a classic Troy Lee Designs paint scheme with Momo FXL1 wheels that pair beautifully with the 265/50-20 Nitto 420 tires. Mechanically, the Veracruz was modified with Eibach springs and received a beefed-up Willwood oversized brake system.

Luxury and comfort are the cornerstones of this customization, which features custom leather seats, painted interior moldings and trim pieces and custom floor mats by Intro-Tech automotive. Troy Lee wrapped the package with an Infinity premium audio/video system and topped it with a Thule cargo box.

Ernie Manansala – Urban Assault Vehicle Accent

The Ernie Manansala “Urban Assault Vehicle” Accent three-door is the ultimate in budget-friendly, low-weight tuner vehicles. The Accent’s custom high-end performance wide body kit is visually stunning with its red-on-black paint scheme. Add in Momo racing seats and you’ve got a potent mixture of energy and speed.

Mobis – Parts Expo Tiburon

The Tiburon regularly is at the top of the list of must-see cars at the show, and this year is no exception. Its track-inspired styling and handling characteristics inspire tuners with endless possibilities. To that end, Hyundai’s accessories group, Mobis Parts, created the Hyundai Mobis Parts Expo Vehicle. In addition to the KDM full-body kit by Tomato, supercharger by Next Generation Motorsports and Eibach suspension, this Tiburon features prototype parts that will be in Hyundai dealerships’ parts departments in the near future.

INCUS – Hyundai Innovative Customization Elantra

Hyundai has been expanding its aftermarket offerings, which include both aesthetic and performance equipment, that gives owners the tools to customize their vehicles easily and affordably. Decked out with original Hyundai aftermarket accessories, the “Hyundai Innovative Customization” Elantra was crafted by sister parts company INCUS. This vehicle features concept INCUS parts, including a body kit, 17-inch forged alloy wheels, custom mesh grille, suspension and dual exhaust.

The spotlight is plenty crowded at Hyundai these days as the company introduces one new car or truck after another — sometimes before the public’s even gotten used to the one announced only a short time before.

Hyundai is considered to be on the ascend these days, and it is trying to make sure it doesn’t miss a single niche.

So rather than pick one or two cars that’s been overlooked at Hyundai, I’ll introduce you to the newer models to re-familiarize you with all that has happened at one of the world’s busiest auto company.

Most recently Hyundai introduced the all-new Veracruz large crossover, which is intended to do serious damage to the sales of Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.

The Veracruz, with prices ranging from $26,995 to $34,695, looks as if it costs far more than that.

It has three-tiered headlights, a sculpted bumper and an interesting grille that includes a curved portion that houses the Hyundai “Flying H” logo. Its roofline is not unlike the one found on the sexy Infiniti FX series of crossovers.

Standard equipment includes electronic all-wheel drive; proximity key; rain sensing wipers; mirrors mounted on adjustable pedals; full power everything; an audio system that includes an AM/FM, XM Satellite radio, CD and an MP3 player; a 260 horsepower 3.8 liter V-6 (rated at 17 mpg city and 24 highway); heated power side mirrors; and side curtain bags.

Another new model is the Azera GLS, an entry level variant of the popular mid-sized sedan that starts at $24,895 with a five-speed transmission and a 3.3 liter V-6 that is rated at 21/28. New this year for Azera are side view mirrors with side marker indicators added to the Ultimate Package, steering wheel audio controls standard on all models, and contrasting gray stitching on cars equipped with black leather. The Azera is designed to compete with Toyota’s Avalon.

If you want a nice surprise, check out the new 2007 Elantra. This is a car that lists for less than $14,000 for starters — and is better equipped than some cars selling for about half as much more. It’s got front and rear side curtain air bags, adjustable head restraints, full power equipment, remote keyless entry system, tilt steering wheel, rear center armrest with cup holders, center console with two-tier storage compartment and more.

It’s got so much interior volume that the federal government places it in a class size above the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic — there’s more interior volume than you’ll find in Acura’s TL entry-level luxury car.

And don’t think you get all this in a Plain Jane car. The new Elantra is curvaceous, not flat and angular as some compact cars seem to be. It’s got a flowing character line along each of its flanks and an aggressive-looking grille. Inside you’ll find interiors with two-toned themes and touches of aluminum trim.

Power comes from a 2.0 liter, 132 horsepower four-cylinder engine with mileage ratings of 28 mpg city and 36 highway. Prices range from $13,395 to $17,845.

Another star of Hyundai’s lineup this year is the all-new 2007 Santa Fe small crossover.

The Santa Fe has several competitive advantages: It offers a third-row seat, which is a big deal for shoppers these days; two transmissions and two engine choices — both are V-6s, a 2.7 liter 185 horsepower version (rated at 21 mpg city/26 highway) and a 242 horsepower model (rated at 19 city/24 highway); and, of course, a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty.

It also comes with a full complement of safety equipment, including electronic stability control, anti-whiplash active head restraints and six air bags, including side air curtains.

The new Santa Fe has more flowing lines than its predecessor; you don’t see the odd character lines or sharp angles and odd wrinkles that were part of the previous car.

Inside, there’s more luxury and comfort than you might expect: dual zone climate controls; blue backlighting for all interior gauges, switches and buttons; and soft-touch, high quality materials and low-gloss surfaces through the car.

Prices range from $20,945 to $27,945.

What’s Coming in 2008

The big news during the next model year will be the long-awaited arrival of Hyundai’s first true full-size rear-wheel drive sedan. A concept version was called the Genesis, but it’s possible that name may be changed. Still, the car is expected to look a lot like the sleek, expensive looking Genesis concept sedan that was a hit at the New York International Auto how.

Both V-6 and V-8 versions will be offered, with the V-8 engine having horsepower well in excess of 300 horsepower.

2007 Hyundai Tiburon V6 quick drive

Tiburon is the Spanish word for “shark” and when the original Tiburon was introduced in the mid 90s, it represented a daring take on how to style a sports coupe.

It had thrown conservative design out the sunroof and sliced the envelope in half with its shark-fin spoiler.

When looks matter, inside or our, this machine delivers.

Sharks never stop moving even while they sleep, and that’s fitting because the styling of the latest Tiburon makes it look like its speeding along even at rest. This isn’t a coupe version of some sedate sedan, and as such its designers were free to play.

Scandalous lines electrify its presence, and it demands attention with a low ride, big wheels and dual-outlet exhaust at the rear.

Metallic trim throughout the tastefully restrained cockpit lends itself to the cars overall sporting spirit, and the loaded tester also came with power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, heated leather seats, automatic climate control, keyless entry, and an air quality system.

Build quality is very good, and aside from a few dated switches and controls, interior construction feels the part of a higher priced machine.

Under the hood is a familiar 2.7 litre V6 engine that generates 172 horsepower.

That’s four-cylinder output for many competitors, but the little six is eager to rev, delivers decent mileage and sounds pleasing.

It’s not lightning quick nor particularly smooth, though power is adequate once the revs start to climb.

The test car spun the front tires through a tight six-speed manual gearbox. An automatic transmission is available.

The chassis is composed, solid and eager to play, clearly tuned for performance first, and comfort second. These goals are well met, as the Tiburon goes exactly where you point it without a fuss.

At the end of the day, it is a coupe- meaning limited room for more than one friend and their things. Your author measures 5″9′ and 220 lbs- and if you’re much bigger than me, you’ll feel cramped.

But as a complete package, this Tiburon will be hard to beat, with the combination of Hyundai’s warranty coverage, sporting attitude, quality, styling and features. It’s a highly energetic vehicle that’s a real treat to drive.

This shark’s been around, but its teeth are still sharp.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 05/31/2007 The Yahoo! Autos Green Center ranks the 2007 Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Tiburon and Tucson models as five of the top 100 “Green” Cars for 2007. The vehicles listed online at http://autos.yahoo.com/green_center/ were ranked on a scale of 1-100 based on the environmental impact of each vehicle. The Yahoo! Autos Green Center currently ranks more than 450 models in-market in the U.S.

On this year’s “green” cars list, two of the five Hyundai models listed by Yahoo! Autos ranked in the top 20. The 2007 Hyundai Accent GLS scored 75 out of 100 points. The Accent is certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV), delivering up to 37 mpg (automatic transmission/highway). The 1.6-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC) in-line four-cylinder engine that features four valves per cylinder with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) give the engine a very broad powerband, coupled with high fuel efficiency and low emissions.

The 2007 Hyundai Elantra scored 76 out of 100 possible points. The Elantra is certified as a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) and is as clean as many hybrid electric vehicles. Elantra achieves this certification with its advanced 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder engine that features DOHC and CVVT, to ensure improved fuel economy.

“This recognition of our clean, fuel-efficient powertrains demonstrates our commitment to the environment, just as our leadership in lifesaving safety technologies like electronic stability control (ESC) demonstrates our commitment to the safety of our owners,” said John Krafcik, vice president of Strategic Planning and Product Development, Hyundai Motor America. “More and more people are seeing Hyundai as a smart choice, and the Green Ratings from Yahoo! The “greener” a vehicle is, the higher its “Green Rating” will be, lowering its harm to both the health of the planet and humans. Numerous major environmental pollutants associated with a motor vehicle are covered by the “Green Rating,” including:
