Three Hyundai Models Earn Top Safety Pick Awards

Three Hyundai Models Earn Top Safety Pick Awards

For the first time ever, three Hyundai models earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award. The Hyundai Veracruz and Santa Fe received awards in the midsize SUV segment and the Hyundai Entourage in the minivan segment. All winning vehicles are recognized for their ability to protect people in front, side and rear crashes.

This marks the third year in a row the Entourage has received the highest honor – the IIHS Top Safety Pick award in the minivan category. All three vehicles also earned five-star crash test ratings, the highest government rating under NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program, for both frontal and side impact.

Top Safety Pick awards recognize vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side and rear crashes based on ratings in the Institute’s tests. Each vehicle’s overall evaluation is based on a variety of measures including injuries to dummies, vehicle’s structural performance, restraint performance, etc. Winners are also required to be equipped with the latest crash prevention technology, electronic stability control (ESC) – which is standard on all three Hyundai Top Safety Pick vehicles and on 73% of all Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S.

Consumers Digest Names Best Buys

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Late last week, Consumers Digest released its Best Buy ratings for 2008 model-year vehicles.

Thirty-six vehicles and 13 additional models earned recognition across 10 categories, according to officials.

Receiving honors were:

-Small cars: Dodge Caliber, Honda Civic, Honda Fit, Jeep Compass, Nissan Versa, Scion xB

-Family cars: Ford Fusion, Ford Taurus, Honda Accord, Lincoln MKZ, Mercury Milan, Mercury Sable, Saturn Aura, Toyota Camry/Camry Solara

-Luxury cars: Acura TL, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G35, Lexus LS 460

-Sports cars: BMW 3-Series, Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, MINI Cooper, Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky

-Trucks: Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra

-Full-size/luxury SUVs: Acura MDX, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Mercedes-Benz M-Class

-Hybrids: Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Mercury Mariner Hybrid, Toyota Prius

Ratings are derived from test driving, safety ratings, ownership costs, warranty, price, comfort, ergonomics, style and amenities, according to the publication.

Some of the performance values tested are starting and acceleration, braking, gear shifting, steering, handling, ride quality and fuel economy.

“‘Value,’ as we see it, is based on purchase price and ownership costs relative to quality performance and subjective factors like comfort and design,” commented Randy Weber, publisher.

“Few purchases are more important, or require more research, than buying a new vehicle,” Weber added. “Our analyses underscore our commitment to ensure consumers are as satisfied with their auto purchase years after making it as they were the day they drove off the lot.”

Different this year was the split between midsize and compact SUVs and the addition of the hybrid category, officials noted. The division among SUVs was due to an increase in crossover SUVs, explained Rich Dzierwa, the magazine’s editor.

“Consumers gravitated toward the combination of car-like ride and SUV utility that crossovers bring to the table,” Dzierwa pointed out. “Not surprisingly, manufactures reacted quickly to grow this component of their vehicle lineup.”

Market demands also accounted for the addition of the hybrid category. As Dzierwa notes, a low number of entries kept hybrids out of the report, but now there are 13 hybrids on the market.

“We would still remind consumers that a hybrid carries a price of some $2,000 more than a conventional version of the same vehicle and that it could take six or seven years or more to recoup the sticker prices on gas savings,” Dzierwa added.

Sonata, Elantra, Tucson And Entourage Earn Top Category Honors

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 09/05/2007 Automotive research and consulting firm AutoPacific announced today that Hyundai has won the 2007 Ideal Vehicle Award in four product segments:

– Most Ideal Premium Mid-Size Car: Hyundai Sonata
– Most Ideal Compact Car: Hyundai Elantra
– Most Ideal Compact Crossover SUV: Hyundai Tucson*
– Most Ideal Minivan: Hyundai Entourage
*Hyundai Tucson also took home the Vehicle Satisfaction Award

AutoPacific’s second annual Ideal Vehicle Awards (IVA) ranked auto manufacturers for how closely their 2007 model year cars or trucks came to matching owners’ expectations and criteria. The vehicles that customers said they would change the least were considered the most “ideal.” Measurements for the award include consumer trust, anticipation, expectations and reality.

Hyundai has done an outstanding job understanding their target buyer and is creating the product that is ‘ideal’ for its buyers,” said AutoPacific’s President, George Peterson.

“These awards are a reflection of Hyundai’s continued commitment to our customers,” said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The Hyundai brand stands for industry-leading quality, superior standard safety technology, and great value – with these values we’ll continue to work hard to meet the expectations of our customers.”

To determine the winners, AutoPacific asked owners to rate their new car or truck on how close it came to “ideal” in the following areas: exterior size; passenger roominess; cargo space; driver’s seat comfort; driver’s seat visibility; interior technology; power; ease of getting in and out; interior storage compartments; and tires and wheels. The IVA ratings reflect input from buyers of new vehicles purchased from September 2006 through December 2006. Over 24,000 respondents provided input for these awards.

Mid-New Car & Truck Buyers Guide: Hyundai Driving for Success With Many Models

Mid-Year New Car & Truck Buyers Guide: Hyundai driving for success with many models

The spotlight is plenty crowded at Hyundai these days as the company introduces one new car or truck after another — sometimes before the public’s even gotten used to the one announced only a short time before.

Hyundai is considered to be on the ascend these days, and it is trying to make sure it doesn’t miss a single niche.

So rather than pick one or two cars that’s been overlooked at Hyundai, I’ll introduce you to the newer models to re-familiarize you with all that has happened at one of the world’s busiest auto company.

Most recently Hyundai introduced the all-new Veracruz large crossover, which is intended to do serious damage to the sales of Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.

The Veracruz, with prices ranging from $26,995 to $34,695, looks as if it costs far more than that.

It has three-tiered headlights, a sculpted bumper and an interesting grille that includes a curved portion that houses the Hyundai “Flying H” logo. Its roofline is not unlike the one found on the sexy Infiniti FX series of crossovers.

Standard equipment includes electronic all-wheel drive; proximity key; rain sensing wipers; mirrors mounted on adjustable pedals; full power everything; an audio system that includes an AM/FM, XM Satellite radio, CD and an MP3 player; a 260 horsepower 3.8 liter V-6 (rated at 17 mpg city and 24 highway); heated power side mirrors; and side curtain bags.

Another new model is the Azera GLS, an entry level variant of the popular mid-sized sedan that starts at $24,895 with a five-speed transmission and a 3.3 liter V-6 that is rated at 21/28. New this year for Azera are side view mirrors with side marker indicators added to the Ultimate Package, steering wheel audio controls standard on all models, and contrasting gray stitching on cars equipped with black leather. The Azera is designed to compete with Toyota’s Avalon.

If you want a nice surprise, check out the new 2007 Elantra. This is a car that lists for less than $14,000 for starters — and is better equipped than some cars selling for about half as much more. It’s got front and rear side curtain air bags, adjustable head restraints, full power equipment, remote keyless entry system, tilt steering wheel, rear center armrest with cup holders, center console with two-tier storage compartment and more.

It’s got so much interior volume that the federal government places it in a class size above the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic — there’s more interior volume than you’ll find in Acura’s TL entry-level luxury car.

And don’t think you get all this in a Plain Jane car. The new Elantra is curvaceous, not flat and angular as some compact cars seem to be. It’s got a flowing character line along each of its flanks and an aggressive-looking grille. Inside you’ll find interiors with two-toned themes and touches of aluminum trim.

Power comes from a 2.0 liter, 132 horsepower four-cylinder engine with mileage ratings of 28 mpg city and 36 highway. Prices range from $13,395 to $17,845.

Another star of Hyundai’s lineup this year is the all-new 2007 Santa Fe small crossover.

The Santa Fe has several competitive advantages: It offers a third-row seat, which is a big deal for shoppers these days; two transmissions and two engine choices — both are V-6s, a 2.7 liter 185 horsepower version (rated at 21 mpg city/26 highway) and a 242 horsepower model (rated at 19 city/24 highway); and, of course, a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty.

It also comes with a full complement of safety equipment, including electronic stability control, anti-whiplash active head restraints and six air bags, including side air curtains.

The new Santa Fe has more flowing lines than its predecessor; you don’t see the odd character lines or sharp angles and odd wrinkles that were part of the previous car.

Inside, there’s more luxury and comfort than you might expect: dual zone climate controls; blue backlighting for all interior gauges, switches and buttons; and soft-touch, high quality materials and low-gloss surfaces through the car.

Prices range from $20,945 to $27,945.

What’s Coming in 2008

The big news during the next model year will be the long-awaited arrival of Hyundai’s first true full-size rear-wheel drive sedan. A concept version was called the Genesis, but it’s possible that name may be changed. Still, the car is expected to look a lot like the sleek, expensive looking Genesis concept sedan that was a hit at the New York International Auto how.

Both V-6 and V-8 versions will be offered, with the V-8 engine having horsepower well in excess of 300 horsepower.

The 2007 Total Quality Awards

The 2007 Total Quality Awards™

Hyundai – 3, Toyota – 0; Perceived Quality the New Paradigm Says Strategic Vision

Monday, June 4, 2007

San Diego — For the first time ever, the Hyundai brand has produced the most leaders on Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Index™ (TQI), leading in three segments. The San-Diego-based research firm today announced 2007 results, based on the ratings of new vehicle owners in 19 product segments.

The only other brand to produce three leaders was Nissan. Hyundai Motors had a total of five leaders (the Kia brand earning two more), Ford Motor and BMW Group each earned three (one for BMW, two for Mini); GM, Honda, and Mercedes each earned two with Dodge, Lexus and Volkswagen each earning one. BMW repeated as the top scoring brand, the eighth time in nine years, and Volkswagen of America kept its claim as the best full-line corporation.

The Total Quality Index™ is the premier measure of new vehicle owner satisfaction. It asks buyers to rate all aspects of the ownership experience, from buying and owning to driving. Although Toyota improved overall with their TQI scores, the most significant change in 2007 is the lack of any Toyota brand segment leaders. Examining the number of problems or Things-Gone-Wrong per vehicle (the traditional definition of quality), Toyota and Lexus are still among the best. However, Toyota’s lead in this narrower definition of quality is now shared with other brands like Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti and domestic brands such as Ford. For example, the Ford Expedition EL enjoyed a very large lead and had fewest problems in the segment. Expedition EL owners recognized innovative changes, which are key to future domestic success.

“With automotive corporations now doing a terrific job in providing vehicles with minimal problems, the Cues of Quality (those product attributes that signal quality and create customer Trust) have a greater impact on the purchase decision. Perceived Quality has the power to change customer’s perceptions of a vehicle from being ‘interesting’ to eventually considered and purchased,” says Alexander Edwards, Strategic Vision President. “In the past, one could count the number of problems per vehicle; but for automotive customers today and tomorrow, a comprehensive and integrated perception of the ownership experience will be what drives the decision making process.”

“Even though Hyundai is often overlooked by the US customer, Hyundai’s success in 2007 is not surprising given its’ current products and press in leadership that is looking to the near and distant future with new designs from styling to powertrain,” reports Dr. Darrel Edwards, Founder and CEO of Strategic Vision.

Long time leader Honda Odyssey (five years in a row) has now been replaced by the Hyundai Entourage, Kia Sedona and Nissan Quest in a three-way tie for this segment. The Ford F-150 returns to a leadership position in this most tightly contested segment, tied with the Nissan Titan.

“Unlike last year, we’re seeing many new or redesigned vehicles not ranking near the top of their segments.” says Alexander. “These vehicles typically have the potential to deliver more rational and emotional elements which are relevant to buyers. Although the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris all did well, they did not hit the same emotional chord which resounded in the DNA of the Volkswagen Rabbit buyers.”

Responses from more than 27,000 buyers who bought 2007 models in September, October and November of 2006 were used to calculate the Total Quality Index™. Strategic Vision has calculated TQI annually since 1995.

Since its incorporation in 1989, Strategic Vision has studied consumer and constituent decision-making for the widest variety of clients, including most auto manufacturers, Coca-Cola, American Airlines, Procter and Gamble, most advertising agencies. Its unique expertise is identifying consumers’ motivational hierarchies, including the values that shape perceptions and capture the customers’ emotional responses and drive behavior. Hyundai Azera, Entourage And Santa Fe Named Best-In-Segment In Strategic Vision 2007 Total Quality Index

Fountain Valley, Calif., 06/04/2007 Hyundai Motor America produced the most segment leaders of any automotive manufacturer, according to Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Index™ (TQI), which measures total vehicle satisfaction among new car owners. Achieving the top slot in three distinct vehicle segments is a first for Hyundai. The Strategic Vision results released today placed the Hyundai Azera sedan atop the large car segment, the Entourage (tied with the Kia Sedona and Nissan Quest) in the top spot for the minivan segment and the Santa Fe on top in the small sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment.

Hyundai’s success in 2007 is not surprising given its current products and press, as well as its leadership team who is looking strategically to the future with new designs from styling to powertrain,” reports Dr. Darrel Edwards, founder and CEO of San Diego-based Strategic Vision.

The Hyundai Santa Fe beat out competitors such as the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler 4-door for the top spot. The Hyundai Entourage minivan, which tied for first with the Kia Sedona and Nissan Quest, beat out the Honda Odyssey for the top slot, a position held by the Odyssey for the last five years.

“The Strategic Vision Total Quality Index demonstrates that Azera, Entourage, and Santa Fe are high-quality vehicles with terrific appeal,” said John Krafcik, vice president of Product Development and Strategic Planning. “At Hyundai we stand for great design, quality, safety, and outstanding value….and these study results show that consumers love this recipe.”

The Total Quality Index is the measurement of new vehicle owner satisfaction. The Strategic Vision poll surveyed more than 27,000 vehicle buyers who bought 2007 models in September, October and November of 2006. Consumers were asked an array of questions about their ownership experience, including buying, owning and driving their new vehicles. The Index 2007 results were based on ratings of new vehicle owners in 19 product categories.

Hyundai Vehicles Named "Best Cars For Families"

Hyundai Vehicles Named “Best Cars For Families”

April 20, 2007 — FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. — AAA (American Automobile Association) and Parents magazine named the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe and Entourage as two of 2007’s “Best Cars for Families.”

The 15-vehicle list, now in its fifth year, appears with detailed reviews of each model in the April issue of Parents magazine. AAA’s auto-safety experts and Parents’ editors – who understand the wants and needs of families – created a list of sedans, economy cars, vans, SUVs, and crossovers they felt perfectly met everyday family demands.

According to AAA/Parents’ judges, “The Santa Fe is packed with safety technology to protect your little ones, but the modest price tag leaves something for their college funds. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and side-impact and side-curtain air bags are standard. Nice surprises include second-row A/C vents to keep your kids cool and a heated windshield wiper for melting through the ice.” After a road test with the Hyundai Santa Fe, Sally Lee, editor-in-chief of Parents magazine said, “I loved the easy-to-read instrument panel and the great storage space. Car seats were a breeze to install. It’s a lot of car for the money — and stylish too.”

AAA/Parents’ judges said, “No van has more standard safety features: Three-row side-curtain air bags, [electronic] stability control, and antilock brakes are all standard. So are the Entourage’s three-zone climate-control system, power windows in the sliding doors, a flat-folding third row, and all the obligatory storage nooks. And how’s this for value: Even if you opt for power rear doors and tailgate, heated front seats, leather upholstery, and wood-grain accents, you’ll pay less than $30,000.”

“We are proud to accept recognition from two organizations that offer helpful information and advice to better the lives of consumers,” said John Krafcik, vice president of Strategic Planning and Product Development, Hyundai Motor America. “Santa Fe and Entourage are great examples of Hyundai’s continued commitment to providing affordable vehicles with standard life-saving technologies and convenience features that every family is looking for.”

2007 Entourage Offers It All, Except High Price

2007 Entourage Offers It All, Except High Price

Despite predictions of its impending death that have been swirling around the minivan since the sport utility craze began in the early ’90s, this vehicle class is alive and well.

About 1 million new minivans will be sold this year, which is down about 10 percent from 2005 and 20 percent from 2000.

But industry experts expect the segment to stabilize at about this year’s level, and there is money to be made in any segment that can garner a million units worth of sales in a year.

The South Koreans have two quite solid players in the segment: the Kia Sedona, introduced in its second generation just last year, and the all-new Hyundai Entourage, the first minivan from South Korea’s largest automaker.

The Entourage, our test vehicle for the week, almost never came to market.

After Kia, a subsidiary of Hyundai, rolled out the newest Sedona for 2006, Hyundai announced it would create a minivan using the Sedona platform, and would call it the Entourage.

A few weeks later, though, Hyundai shifted gears and said it would not introduce a minivan after all, and the project was thought to be dead.

Then a few weeks later, the Entourage was back on again, probably because of pressure from Hyundai’s U.S. dealers, who had been clamoring for a minivan for years. Introduced last fall was the Entourage, and by all reports, it’s selling very well.

It didn’t hurt that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety put the Entourage its short list — 13 total — of vehicles that are the group’s Top Safety Picks for 2007, only one of two minivans to make the list.

The list is based on ratings from the institute’s rigorous crash-testing program; after testing the Sedona shortly after the redesigned model went on sale last year, the institute said it was the “safest minivan ever tested.”

The 2007 Entourage, which was not tested, received the same rating as the Sedona because the two vehicles are functionally identical.

That the Hyundai model made the prestigious Top Safety Picks list, to the exclusion of such popular minivans as the Odyssey and Sienna, is quite a coup for the South Korean automaker.

And, of course, the company is using the safety honor as part of its marketing campaign for its minivan.

The Entourage, in Hyundai product literature and news releases, is touted as having “more safety, more room and more value than the Odyssey,” the vehicle that Hyundai used as a benchmark.

So besides safety, what’s so great about the Entourage?

First, there is the value. It’s a minivan whose features go head to head against the top competitors, yet the price is less, a Hyundai hallmark.

A well-equipped Entourage, with electronic stability control, six air bags, the active front head restraints, roof rack rails, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry, AM-FM-CD player, front wiper de-icer and three-zone climate control, is $23,795, which is “more than $1,500 less than a Honda Odyssey LX,” Hyundai says.

There are the obvious minivan necessities that are helping it win consumers, such as its dual power sliding rear doors with power windows; middle and rear seats that fold to increase cargo space dramatically, including a third-row seat that folds completely into the floor; front and rear air conditioning, with dual front controls; power adjustable pedals; and even such options as leather upholstery, a power tailgate and heated seats.

There is an available DVD rear entertainment system, a backup warning system, and a premium Infinity audio system with in-dash CD player and surround sound, as well.

The Entourage is a good performer, too, thanks to its all-aluminum, 3.8-liter V-6 engine, which turns out 250 horsepower and 253 foot-pounds of torque. That’s on par with the Odyssey and Sienna, and more horsepower than the Ford Freestar, Caravan and Chevrolet Uplander, for instance.

That engine, which also is environmentally friendly because of its ultra-low-emissions certification, is connected to an advanced, computer-controlled five-speed automatic transmission.

This combination gives the Entourage EPA fuel-economy estimates of 18 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway — better than most other vehicles on the market that can hold up to seven people and their stuff.

Cargo space behind the third row of seating is more than 32 cubic feet. That can expand to more than 80 cubic feet with the 60/40 split-rear seat folded completely into the floor, and to 141 cubic feet with the rear seat folded and the two middle seats folded and tilted forward.

The van can even tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500 pounds if the trailer is equipped with brakes; otherwise, the limit is 1,000 pounds, which is enough for a small boat or one-horse trailer.

Among safety features standard on all models are the stability control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, and side-curtain air bags for all three rows of seating.

All seating positions come with three-point seat belts and adjustable headrests.

The vans also come with a tire-pressure monitoring system, which reports to the driver the pressure of each tire, and gives an alert if even one of the tires is improperly inflated.

The van’s unibody construction — frame and body are combined in one unit — helps give it a smooth, quiet, carlike ride, and the 118.9-inch wheelbase and 66.3-inch track width help keep the vehicle quite stable, even in tight turns.

And speaking of tight turns, the Entourage has a very convenient turning radius of just 39.6 feet.

Entourage models have either 16-inch steel or 17-inch alloy wheels, depending on the trim level.

Three levels are offered: the base GLS, the midlevel SE and the top-of-the-line Limited, which includes leather.

Our test model was the SE, with a starting price of $26,295 plus $700 freight. That includes tri-zone automatic climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual power sliding doors, fog lights, dual heated power mirrors, power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with built-in audio controls, roof rails and more.

Options on ours included the premium entertainment package ($2,900), which added the Infinity audio system, rear DVD, heated front seats, backup warning system, universal garage/gate opener, and an electrochromatic rearview mirror; and carpeted floor mats ($175).

Total sticker was $30,070 including freight and options, but it had just about everything except for the leather upholstery.

The Car Book 2007 Honors Six Hyundai Models With “Best Bets” Selections

Hyundai’s Accent, Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson and Entourage Recognized for Meeting the Safety and Performance Needs of the American Buyer

March 6, 2007 — Fountain Valley, Calif. — Hyundai, with the freshest line up in the auto industry, earned “Best Bet” distinction for more than half its vehicles in The Car Book 2007. Six Hyundai models – the Accent, Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson and Entourage – earned the title “Best Bet” from author Jack Gillis and the Center for Auto Safety. For 27 years, The Car Book has selected vehicles for this distinction based on how well they respond to the safety and performance needs of today’s consumer.

Hyundai has completely revamped its model line up with a focus on American consumers’ desire for safety and performance,” said John Krafcik, vice president of product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The six models selected are examples of our dedication to providing consumers with unsurpassed standard safety equipment and great performance in a well-designed package.”

The Car Book has analyzed new vehicles each year for the past 27 years to identify vehicles that have made a significant contribution to bettering the market. “Best Bets” ratings designate The Car Book’s highest-rated cars in each of the size categories. Ratings are based on expected performance in ten important categories: crash tests, safety features, fuel economy, rollover, overall maintenance and repair costs, warranties, insurance costs and complaints, with the heaviest emphasis on safety.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 02/08/2007 MotorWeek recognizes the Hyundai Entourage as the "Best Minivan" in its 2007 Editors' Choice Awards. The award was distributed at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. As a winner, the Entourage will also be featured on a special MotorWeek episode on PBS, February 10.

"MotorWeek's 2007 Drivers' Choice Award for Best Minivan goes to a duet, the Hyundai Entourage and Kia Sedona," said John Davis, producer, host and creator of MotorWeek, the automotive series on PBS. "This second-generation Korean-branded design matches all the best features of its rivals, and then beats them in price and powertrain warranty. The leaps that Hyundai and Kia make in perceived quality with each new vehicle are well documented, and the Entourage and Sedona are just the latest examples. From school bus to apartment moving, minivans are the most versatile vehicles on the planet, and this two-some is tops."

The 25th annual MotorWeek Driver's Choice Award winners were based on the evaluations of 15 judges, comprised of the writers, producers, and crew of MotorWeek. More than 150 cars and trucks were put through rigorous road and track tests as judges assessed performance, technology, practicality, and overall value from the consumer's perspective. Winning vehicles were selected in thirteen different categories.

"Since its introduction last year, Entourage has earned a number of honors and awards including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's top five-star crash test rating and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest honor - the gold ‘Top Safety Pick’ award," said John Krafcik, vice president of Strategic Planning and Product Development, Hyundai Motor America. "We proudly accept the MotorWeek award, which recognizes the Entourage's spacious interior, powerful performance, and unsurpassed standard safety technologies."
