Hyundai Genesis Named to NADAguides.com 2009 Top Luxury Car List

Hyundai’s all-new Genesis flagship answers the $64k question – the only vehicle under $64k named in NADAguides.com “Top 5 Luxury Cars for 2009”

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 12/08/2008 Hyundai’s new rear-wheel drive premium sports sedan, the Genesis, was named a “Top 5 Luxury Car for 2009” by NADAguides.com, the world’s largest publisher of vehicle pricing and information and a recognized authority for vehicle valuations. The list includes models from Jaguar, Bentley, Mercedes and Audi, all with base prices more than $32,000 above the Genesis’ starting MSRP of $33,000.

The Genesis placed fourth, behind the Audi A8 L (starting at $74,050), the Jaguar XF Supercharged ($64,475) and the Mercedes-Benz S Class 550 ($90,225). And Hyundai beat the Bentley Arnage, which had the highest sticker of all vehicles on the list, starting at $224,900 — nearly seven times the starting price of the Genesis.

“The recent economic crisis has actually created opportunities for carmakers such as Hyundai to create inroads with car buyers in market segments where Hyundai isn’t typically known,” said Jeff Glucker, road test editor, NADAguides.com. “They really hit a homerun with the 2009 Genesis, offering solid performance, luxury and technology features at a much better value than other vehicles in its class.”

The market analysts at NADAguides.com selected the “Top 5 Luxury Cars for 2009” based on a variety of factors, including styling, luxury amenities and overall handling.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by NADAguides.com market analysts as a true rival to luxury competitors in 2009,” said Michael Deitz, manager, Product Development, Hyundai Motor America. “The Genesis was benchmarked against Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and other iconic luxury brands throughout the development process, so to be listed alongside them validates Hyundai’s overall success, especially because we didn’t have to sacrifice our long-standing tradition of offering extraordinary value.”

Genesis is built on Hyundai’s all-new, performance-driven rear-wheel-drive architecture. It offers two powertrains, including a 3.8-liter V6 engine and Hyundai’s all-new 4.6-liter Tau V8. Tau produces 375 horsepower, leading all its competitors in specific output with 80 horsepower per liter while providing better fuel economy than competitive luxury make V6 models. With technology rivaling more expensive luxury sedans, Genesis showcases features such as XM NavTraffic, Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS), and Lexicon® audio systems. Additionally, all Hyundai Genesis have standard iPod connectivity, electronic active head restraints, and Bluetooth hands-free phone system.

Hyundai Accent Retains Crown as America’s Least Expensive Car

November 25, 2008 — FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. — The country’s most dependable sub-compact car is also its most affordable.

The high-mileage 2009 Hyundai Accent has a starting price of $9,970, making it the least expensive new car on the market. But it’s also the “Most Dependable Sub-Compact Car” available (as determined by the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study(SM)) and one of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road today – a trifecta that no other car can match.

“Accent is the perfect vehicle for a customer looking for the ideal mix of price, dependability and fuel economy,” said Mark Dipko, Small Car product manager. “And as a brand known the world over for its value, we feel it is important to retain our crown as the most affordable new car available.”

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai announced even more good news for the Accent, revealing that next year a special high-mileage “Blue” edition will be available that offers even higher levels of fuel economy without adding to the price. Accent “Blue” will feature fuel-efficient modifications to reduce engine friction and rolling resistance, enhance aerodynamics, optimize gearing and revise engine calibrations for maximum efficiency, all adding up to higher fuel mileage and lower emissions than today’s model.

The 2009 Accent GS retains the same content as last year’s model and has not been reduced to achieve America’s best price point. Accent GS offers a 1.6-litre, 110-horsepower engine, power steering, advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, roof-mounted curtain airbags, tire pressure monitoring system, front variable intermittent wipers, 60/40 split fold-down seatback, six-way adjustable driver seat, adjustable head restraints for all seating positions and rear spoiler.

Pricing for all other Accent models remains unchanged, delivering outstanding value throughout the lineup. In addition to the $9,970 Accent GS 3-door with manual transmission, the Accent three-door with automatic transmission starts at $12,070; Accent GLS 4-door with manual transmission starts at $12,920; and the sport-tuned and comprehensively equipped Accent SE 3-door with manual transmission starts at $15,070. Freight charges for Accent are $695.

All Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by The Hyundai Advantage, America’s Best Warranty. Hyundai Initiates CO2 Offset Program for All 2009 Genesis Sedans

Genesis Forest Project Will Offset More than 93,000 Metric Tons of CO2

LOS ANGELES, 11/19/2008 Hyundai Motor America and Carbonfund.org, the nation’s leading non-profit carbon offset provider, unveiled the Genesis Forest Project today, at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, to offset the entire first year of emissions for all 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedans sold in the United States. Hyundai anticipates that the Genesis Forest Project will offset 93,170 metric tons[1] of CO2 through the permanent conservation and reforestation of 3,000 acres of tropical forest in Brazil. The offset program reduces emissions and improves efficiency across the Hyundai model line-up. Hyundai is inviting its owners and others interested in helping preserve the environment to learn more at hyundai.carbonfund.org.

The Genesis Forest Project is one of the first voluntary carbon offset projects that will meet the high standards of the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards as well as the Social Carbon™ methodology. The Genesis Forest Project is the only program of its kind to offer seed grants for new projects and allow consumers to contribute to the expansion of the forest. Carbon offsets will be retroactively applied to all 2009 Genesis sedan sales, which began in June, and continue through the end of the year.

“We realize this is a small step toward making a positive impact on climate change,” said Justin Osborne, national manager, Brand Strategy, Hyundai Motor America. “As the fifth-largest car company in the world, we are proud of our efforts to develop cars that are better for people and the planet. Hyundai is introducing new technologies and raising the bar for fuel-efficient vehicles, which will be introduced over the next several years. As we strive to improve, we are making a humble contribution to make the planet we all share a better place.”

The Genesis Forest Project will serve as a model of sustainability for the surrounding region by balancing the needs of local communities while helping to fight global climate change. In addition to its environmental benefits, the Genesis Forest Project will create local economic opportunities, improve the regional environment and help preserve biodiversity.

Carbon Offsetting and Environmental Conservation

Carbon offsets can mitigate carbon dioxide emissions produced by everyday activities, including driving. Carbon offset programs support renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects where they are most cost effective.

Hyundai chose to locate the Genesis Forest Project in Tocantins, Brazil – an area known as the Cerrado region, which is classified as a Biodiversity Hotspot. It features a wide array of unique plant and animal species including the giant anteater, giant armadillo, jaguar and maned wolf. With less than two percent of the region protected in national parks and conservation areas, this area is threatened by the rapid deforestation it has experienced over the past 50 years due to unsustainable agricultural practices. Two-thirds of the project is dedicated to avoiding deforestation and conserving land. The other third of the project is dedicated to reforestation, which will introduce 30 native plant species back to the area.

In addition to partnering with Carbonfund.org, Genesis Forest Project will partner with Brazil’s Ecological Institute. Hyundai and CarbonFund.org will administer the offset program using the Social Carbon™ methodology which, developed by the Institute, ensures that the long-term contribution of the project lead to the sustainable development of the local region through constant monitoring and analysis. The project’s carbon offsets will be registered on the Social Carbon registry. In addition, Cantor CO2e will be involved in the project.

Environmental Research Support

The Genesis Forest Project also supports ongoing research that will benefit the Cerrado and similar regions for years to come. Hyundai’s program calls for an on-site eco-tropical research center that will provide scholarships for the advanced study of the region, as well as assist with training and research needs. Hyundai also has pledged financial support for the work of the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA), the international leader in setting accepted standards of land-based carbon offset projects with multi-faceted environmental and social benefits. Finally, Hyundai will sponsor the Hyundai Climate Grants Program in conjunction with the CCBA to award three $35,000 grants to developers of similar initiatives creating new forestry projects that meet the CCBA standards.

Support for the Local Community:

“Social Carbon” programs designed to create jobs and provide income for the local community, as well as gain support in conserving the region, are important elements of the Genesis Forest Project.

Local communities are offered land preservation workshops focused on informing farmers and the community about the long-term damage caused by the common practice of burning forests to release nitrogen and other nutrients into the soil for crops.

The program also supports the local fire brigade, which is ill-equipped to counter forest fires. This project provides financial support to the brigade to put out and prevent forest fires at the project site and within the region.

The Genesis Forest Project will educate community members about utilizing the forest’s natural resources responsibly, including the development of an agri-forest system which supplies fruit, soil, tree oils and more that can be sold or used by the community.

The program will institute a nursery program to produce seedlings to plant at the project during the reforestation phase. The nursery is an ongoing effort to supply plant species throughout the region.

Hyundai Releases Additional Engineering and Feature Information for the All-New 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Genesis Coupe Delivers an Estimated 30 MPG

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 30, 2008Hyundai released additional engineering and feature information for the all-new 2010 Genesis Coupe today. The Genesis Coupe, and its rear-wheel drive platform-mate the Genesis sedan will make their Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show debuts next week.

“One of the program targets for the Genesis engineering team was world-class weight efficiency,” said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “When you look at the size and content of both Genesis models, you’ll find we lead all our competitors in weight efficiency. We also target leadership in power-to-weight ratio. We think that’s just smart strategy in today’s world. It pays huge dividends in both performance and fuel economy, and that’s especially important in the segments in which these cars compete.”

Vehicle Engine Curb Weight (pounds) Length (inches)
Genesis sedan 3.8-liter V6 3748 195.9
Genesis sedan 4.6-liter V8 4012 195.9
Genesis Coupe 2.0-liter turbo 3303 182.3
Genesis Coupe 3.8-liter V6 3402 182.3

Both Genesis Coupe and sedan are rich in ultra-high-strength steel, leading to world-class body rigidity. The Genesis sedan is 10-12 percent stiffer in torsion than Lexus and Mercedes-Benz competitors, yet it is lighter than these benchmark sedans, and offers more interior room. At just 3,303 pounds, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T is hundreds of pounds lighter than all of its IRS-equipped rear-wheel-drive competitors, with body-bending rigidity 24 percent higher than BMW E46 M3.

Vehicle Length Curb Weight (lbs.) Horsepower Power-to-weight ratio
Genesis Coupe 3.8 182.3 3402 310 (est.) 11.0
BMW 335i 181.1 3571 300 11.9
Infiniti G37 183.1 3616 330 11.0
Camaro LS 190.4 3780 300 (est.) 12.6
Challenger 197.7 3819 250 15.3

This focus on weight efficiency pays dividends across the board. The Genesis sedan owes its ability to deliver both strong performance (0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds) and excellent fuel economy (25 mpg EPA highway rating) in great part due to its impressive weight efficiency. Similarly, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T sets a new benchmark for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive gasoline fuel efficiency with a remarkable 30 mpg estimated EPA highway rating, because of its weight-efficient platform and its efficient 2.0-liter, low-pressure, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

“While some turbochargers sacrifice smooth drivability with high operating boost pressures in the 20 psi range, Genesis Coupe uses a refined, low-boost calibration for smoothness and efficiency,” said Derek Joyce, Genesis Coupe product manager. “We could have opted solely for big performance numbers, but our focus for the 2.0T was a more balanced package.”

GENESIS COUPE PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
With the start of U.S. market production now just a few months away, Hyundai Motor America is releasing model configuration and color choices for the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Genesis sedan has set a new benchmark for the $35,000-$40,000 premium sedan, and we think Genesis Coupe will do the same in the sport coupe segment,” Krafcik said. “From our 30-mpg 2.0T with its low-pressure intercooled 4-cylinder turbo, to the 3.8 Track model with an estimated 310-hp and Brembo braking system, Genesis Coupe offers a wide range of powertrain and performance choices for driving enthusiasts of all stripes.”

Hyundai Accent Named Most Dependable Sub-Compact Car

HYUNDAI BRAND JUMPS EIGHT RANK POSITIONS IN YEARLY DEPENDABILITY STUDY / PROBLEMS-PER-100 VEHICLES DROP OVERALL BY 14 PERCENT / HIGH-MILEAGE ACCENT AT THE TOP OF ITS CLASS / ALL MODELS IMPROVED OVER LAST YEAR

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 08/07/2008 The fuel-efficient Hyundai Accent, which gets up to 35 miles per gallon on the highway, today was named the most dependable sub-compact car by J.D. Power and Associates in its 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). The highly regarded study measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old (2005 model year) vehicles. The study is based on the responses of more than 52,000 owners of new vehicles bought between November 2004 and April 2005.

In addition to the highest ranking by Accent, Hyundai on the whole made dramatic improvements in its overall dependability scores:
– The number of problems per 100 vehicles over the entire product lineup dropped 28 points to 200, a 14 percent increase over 2007, almost tripling the industry average improvement of 10 points.
– In the “non-premium” segment, Hyundai improved from 13th place to sixth place.
Hyundai’s score placed it 13th among the 38 nameplates measured in the study and placed it ahead of the industry average for the first time.
– Each product in the Hyundai product portfolio improved over last year.

“Our continued dedication to quality is paying off for consumers, and this year’s Vehicle Dependability Study is further demonstration of the strides we are making,” said Barry Ratzlaff, Hyundai Motor America director of product quality. “Customers deserve higher levels of quality at the time they buy their vehicle and throughout its lifetime. Our improving initial quality and long-term dependability show that we’ve responded in a meaningful way for the long term.”

Ratzlaff went on to say that with the results achieved in this year’s dependability survey that Hyundai had reached a top tier of only a small number of brands that are above industry average in both initial quality and dependability.

The Accent scores registered only 187 problems per 100 cars, a more than 20 percent improvement over 2007 results. This improvement was mostly accounted for by measured improvements in the engine, climate controls and seating categories.

The VDS study measures problem symptoms of three-year-old vehicles primarily in categories such as ride, handling, braking, temperate controls, seats, engine performance, driving dynamics and interior and exterior durability. The VDS is one of three J.D. Power and Associates quality studies, along with the Initial Quality Study (IQS) that measures quality after 90 days of ownership, and the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study that measures customer perceptions on the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles.

Hyundai Motor America and its Dealers Launch National Hope on Wheels Tour to Support Pediatric Cancer Research

2008 Tour Will Donate More Than $1.6 Million and Commemorate 10 Years of Hyundai Dealers Supporting the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer

Fountain Valley, Calif., 06/25/2008 The 2008 national Hyundai Hope on Wheels™ Tour launched yesterday in Los Angeles with a ceremony to honor the pediatric cancer patients at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. The Tour will visit 32 children’s hospitals across the country from June through November, donating a total of $1.6 million to support the fight against pediatric cancer.

Hyundai Hope on Wheels is the united effort of nearly 800 Hyundai dealers across the U.S. to raise awareness about pediatric cancer and celebrate the lives of children battling the disease. The 2008 Hope on Wheels Tour will highlight the need to support the training and education of the next generation of doctors. Donations made this year will fund the research of one doctor at each institution, as selected by the hospital’s pediatric oncology supervisors. These medical professionals, known as Hyundai Scholars, are in the third or fourth year of a qualified fellowship program in pediatric cancer research, or are in the first seven years of their medical practice specializing in pediatric oncology.

“Between 1975 and 2003, the five year survival rate of childhood cancer rose from 58 percent of patients to almost 80 percent of patients, due to major advances in treatments,” said Dr. Leonard Sender, Chairman of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Medical Advisory Board and Division Chief of Oncology at Children’s Hospital Orange County. “Hyundai and its dealers have shown a strong commitment to the fight against pediatric cancer, and, as physicians, we appreciate their grasp of the need to support the medical professionals who conduct the vital research that propels us forward in the search for better treatments and ultimately a cure.”

New England-area Hyundai dealers started a local initiative in 1998 to raise money for the Jimmy Fund at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Ten years later their work has grown into the Hope on Wheels national program. Since the inception of Hope on Wheels, Hyundai and its dealers have donated more than $10 million to fund pediatric cancer research.

Hyundai and its dealers are so proud that our local, grassroots efforts have grown into a national organization that supports hospitals across the U.S.,” said Oscar Leeser, President of the Hyundai National Hope on Wheels Dealer Board, and El Paso, TX Hyundai dealer. “The Hope on Wheels Tour recognizes the hospitals that are leading the fight against pediatric cancer and honors the brave children who have faced this disease, sharing their stories with other children and families across the country.”

As the tour travels across the country, it will visit each hospital that has been selected to receive a donation to present a check and host a Handprint Ceremony, the cornerstone of the Hope on Wheels Tour. The Handprint Ceremony celebrates pediatric cancer patients’ lives and treatment milestones by capturing their colorful handprints in ink on a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle, sharing their hope with other children and their families across the country. Hope on Wheels has collected hundreds of handprints and will add many more this summer as the 2008 Tour crosses the country.

At the 2008 kick-off ceremony at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Hyundai representatives introduced the 2008 National Youth Ambassador for the Hyundai Hope on Wheels program, Miss Sammy Heim. Sammy, a brave ten-year-old from Yorba Linda, California, was diagnosed with a soft tissue tumor called Rhabdomyosarcoma nearly two years ago. Throughout her treatment, Sammy’s strength and positive attitude never wavered, and now that she is in remission, she is dedicated to helping other children battling cancer.

“I don’t want other innocent kids to have to go through what I did,” Sammy said. “If we didn’t help raise money for cancer research, a lot of kids would have died because they wouldn’t know what it was or how to cure it.” She added, “I want to help raise money for cancer research, too.” The Hope on Wheels Tour has donated more than $10 million to children’s hospitals nationwide and collected hundreds of handprints from children fighting pediatric cancer. The complete list of 2008 Hope on Wheels Tour stops, including benefiting hospitals, is available at www.hopeonwheels.com.
